Sir,
1
Viceroy to Consul-General.
230
Canton, 8th. February, 1908.
I am in receipt of your letter regarding the Coal mort-
gaged by Fung Wa Chun to the National Bank of China, enclosing Balance
Sheet for 1904; the receipt given by Chou Tung Shane's wife; the
office copy of the Mortgage Deeds; and also a declaration executed
by Fung Wa Chun in Songkong.
According to Fang's declaration, the whole business of the
Yao Hsiang Coal Depot reverted on the 31st. of November (? Decembǝr}
1904 to Fung Wa Chun alone; and from that date Chou had no more inter-
est in the concern, he having at that time withdrawn his shares.
As shown by the Books seized (by my officers) relating to
to this Depot, there are, among the receipts and payments during the
fifth moon of last year, entries showing that Chou Tung Sheng still
had e capital of $100,000 therein, and had also made advances of
$25,000. Chou's brother Chou Tich Hei had also advanced $3,000 to the
Depol. There is also a further sum of Tls.4,400 odd due as interest,
Accordingly, in the fifth moon of last year, the coal
still included capital belonging to Chou Tung Sheng and others,
together with advances, showing a total in excess of $100,000. There-
fore Fung's declaration made in Hongkong, that in the 12th. moon of
the 30th. year of Kuang Hsü, Chou Tụng Shene had withdrawn his capital,
is clearly not in accordance with the facts.
Besides, the books of the Coel Depot show that Fung had
originally shares to the amount of $268,000 odd, Feckoning up to the
8th. moon of last year, he had already withdrawn $346,000 odd. An
inspection of the books shows that not anly did Fung Wa Chun not take
over complete control of the business of the Depot, but that he was
still indebted to the Depot in the sum of $70,000 odd. This shows, as
may be seen, that his deposition is not correct.
